El-Shaddai (Hebrew for "Lord of Comfort Provider of All") is a charitable organization working with abandoned street children and those from economically poor or broken families in Goa and parts of India.  El-Shaddai was started in 1996 when Anita Edgar, from the UK visited India and met Pastor Matthew and Julia Kurian.  Together, they have rescued over 2000 children.

El Shaddai exists to open Homes and Shelters for abandoned Street Children and for children coming from economically poor or broken families, providing them with the basic necessities of life and so developing their personalities leading to a brighter future.

The organization is committed to establishing support systems for the weaker sections viz. women and children of our society and to conduct awareness and educational programs including medical camps among slum dwellers.

India is a fast-developing nation. But with a population of over a billion, this progress is lop-sided. While one face of India is a vibrant economy, poverty is a major social problem. Faced with few options in their own homes, many migrate to urban areas in search of work and better living. But, living in slums, they end up without basic necessities dwelling in unhealthy conditions. About 40% families have to satisfy their hunger with one meal a day.

Most of the children of the migrants have never seen the inside of a classroom. Of those that do go to school, the drop out rate is high. Reasons may vary from having no money to pay fees, buy books, school uniform, or inability to cope due to living conditions in the slums.

What We Do:

HOMES & SHELTERS

Our Day Care & Night Shelters provide the first line of refuge to children on the streets. Here they find daily nutritious meals and a bed for the night should they require it. Our counsellors are available to them to talk to and for guidance. We also try to place these children in local government schools so they get off the streets.

We seek to relocate children in dire need in our homes where they are housed and cared for full-time. Children in our homes receive a roof over their heads, food and clothing. More importantly, our staff are constantly on hand to offer help, guidance and most importantly - love.

OPEN SCHOOL

Shanti Niketan is the open school run by El Shaddai in Assagao Goa, catering exclusively to street children in our Homes. The school enables the children to answer the national examinations giving them opportunities in the job market. Some of these children also opt for vocational training on completion of basic schooling.

SLUM OUTREACH PROGRAM:

El-Shaddai is working to change the future for these street children in Goa and parts of India. In Goa, we run four Homes and three night shelters and day care units for street children and orphans. We also provide a meal every day to needy children through our “Manna Meals on Wheels” feeding programs in three cities, Mapusa, Margao and Vasco.

We regularly visit local slums and educate families in health and hygiene, childcare and family planning.

TSUNAMI SURVIVORS:

Following the devastating tsunami of 2004, we opened a children’s Home in Tamil Nadu called Petra House. We also adopted three tsunami affected villages and set up Feeding Programs for the children.
